In the mid-nineteenth century, Thoreau “went to the woods” because he wanted to “live deliberately” and “suck out all the marrow of life.” He said he did it because he didn’t want to come to the end of his life to discover that he had “not lived.” Is Thoreau’s experiment replicable in the twenty-first century where omnipresent iCon­nectors keep us plugged in to a global network of communications and infor­mation? And is there anything we can learn from this experiment that matters in this century?

Help Rebuild Minot

Ethel Pagett of Minot watches volunteer David Wilson of New Albany, Ohio, finish drywall in her flood-damaged home that's being rehabilitated with the assistance of Lutheran Disaster Response. LDR is assisting Minot homeowners who don't have the resources to rebuild their homes.

Rebuilding of the flood-dam­aged Minot area houses owned by the elderly and oth­er vulnerable populations is progressing slowly because there have been few volunteer laborers this winter.

Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) is coordinating rehabilitation of about 500 homes. Their efforts will last through 2014.
